St. Lucia Green Figs
Have you ever wondered where that lovely ripe banana that you have for breakfast comes from?
Well it comes from a banana tree, on a bunch like you see in this picture. Each sector of that bunch is called a hand and the individual bananas that make up that hand are called…yes, you guessed it right…fingers!
Interestingly enough, in St. Lucia, when this fruit is ripe we call it a "ripe banana" but when it is green, as shown here, we call it a "green fig", not to be mistaken with a real fig!
Oh, and when it is green we cook it. In fact "Green Figs & Saltfish" is the National Dish of St. Lucia.
