Today I’m featuring Perfect Wedding Sunsets in response to a call that I got from a Beautiful Rose last night!

Yes, Rose called me saying that she saw, and fell in love with my wedding photography, and wanted me to shoot her renewal of vows, because she got married in St. Lucia 2 years ago and hated her wedding photos.

Now here’s the interesting part…Her hotel is going to charge her extra money for having me come shoot her renewal of vows despite the fact that it’s their in house photographer who produced the wedding pictures that she’s so unhappy with.

And might I ask ~ "Who’s paying for the fact that she hates her wedding pictures so much that she is spending thousands of dollars to return to St. Lucia with her wedding outfit to recreate an event that should have been the happiest moment of her life, but was ruined by incompetent people with cameras, fronting as Wedding Photographers?…And might I add, are sanctioned by the resort"

Okay, so this is where I ask for your help by asking you to enter into this debate by posting comments to my blog to the following questions:

  1. Should a hotel charge a bride extra money if she doesn’t want to use that hotel’s photographer?
  2. If you think that hotels should charge a fee, how much should it be?
  3. Should non-hotel photographers be banned by hotels from shooting weddings at their properties because those hotels have in-house people with cameras (it might be misleading to brides to call them Wedding Photographers)
  4. Suppose a hotel denies a bride the choice of bringing in her personally selected photographer, who bears the blame when her precious wedding photography is ruined, and how should she be compensated for this disaster?
  5. How would you feel if you were the bride or groom in this situation and what would you do?

Please forward this post to as many people as possible as your feedback will help to set policy in the Caribbean where it is becoming common place for hotels to deny brides their right to freely choose their wedding photographer.

You never can tell ~ Your comments just might end up protecting your rights, or the rights of someone who you really love.

So please forward to as many people as possible and I thank you in advance for joining in the debate.

The Sunset Weddings are super. Now to the questions:
    1. No I don’t think they should charge a fee. I am sure the credit for their hotel would be good (free) advertising for them. The rates most hotels charge should be sufficient to allow the bridal couple to choose and use any wedding photographer they want.
    2. See above.
    3. No. There would have to guidelines set up for access and what and where they could take the photos etc so as not to infringe on the other guests of the hotel. Most people love weddings so I can imagine it should be fairly easy – with cooperation – to arrange. of course, the photographers in question would have to be reputable and have good references. They couldn’t just let anyone come in to do the photo shoot.
    4. I believe, in this instance, a discounted rate should have been offered to the couple to help make up for the unhappiness caused with the original photos.
    5. I can understand why they would want to renew their vows in the same setting, but I think I would have strongly considered using a different hotel considering the circumstances.
At the very least, the hotel in question, should seriously look at providing a decent photograher who is trained and experienced in wedding photography. Taking photos of a wedding are so very different and challenging and just any person with a camera is not qualified to do a great job and create the memories that should be created to be relived over and over whenever the photos are viewed. You are aware of that better than anyone.
Good luck with changing the policy for wedding photography in the Caribbean.
    Take care and God Bless.
    Grandma Margaret.

    Hi Grandma Margaret,

How wonderfully said…Thank You Very Much!

By harnessing our collective people power we have the ability to speak, rationally, clearly and responsibly to highlight the unfair positions that those in high office can sometimes take, simply because they have forgotten what it is to walk a mile in the other man’s shoes.

    1. No she should not be charged extra for opting out of their (the hotel’s choice) but should be offered a discount on her bill.
    2. The only time that they should charge a fee is when the Bride chooses to have their photographer (the hotel’s in house photographer) take the photos and they should be able to provide a portfolio of events the they personally photographed and rates should be competitive.
It would be in the best interest to just offer a list of names that handled weddings and let the bride choose.
3 By no means should qualified photographers be banned from hotels. The hotels should work with local qualified photographers to promote their local resources. To give back to the community!
    4. You know I think the hotels have forgotten who is working for who. A refund of the money that they charged for the photos should be give or a reduction in the hotel cost.
    5. I would stand my ground and tell anyone that goes their that this is what could happen to them. I would also make anyone that was thinking about having their wedding there to be as well informed as possible in regards to wedding arrangements made by these hotels. That they are not professionals not do they behave as professional!

    Good Luck!

Thank you Edith for those insightful comments.

I have always felt that the only way to get this unfair policy repealed is by taking the cause to the internet.

And as soon as this dastardly act is exposed and brides realise that their rights are being trampled upon and that their weddings could be ruined I believe that the powers that be will come to their senses and good sense will prevail.
