The Most Challenging Time of My Life…

Hi Everyone,

Let me start by saying Merry Xmas to you and that I hope 2010 will be your best year yet!

The last 6 weeks or so have been the most challenging of my life and have given me cause to pause and re-evaluate many of the values that I once held dear…hence the reason for my absence.

To all who have inquired about me, Thank You for caring and I must let you know that your thoughts have truly meant the world to me…

Just to let you know, I’m quite OK and looking forward to what the future holds…and to sharing lots more pictures, as I was surprised to see how much my picture posts were missed.

…And to make up, after I have posted all of the remaining pictures for the year, I will feature the pictures from my first solo exhibition which was titled: "Dare To Dream" , as that is what I had challenged myself to do.

So once again…Merry Christmas and I hope your day is just as great as mine… or mine as yours!

                Community Helps The Authorities

When fire ravaged a section of downtown Castries (St. Lucia’s Capital) some time ago, members of the community rallied to assist the fire department in controlling the blaze.

Despite the tragedy, it is such acts of selflessness that makes the world a better place.

And as always I ask the question…Can you find one more way of being selfless today and tomorrow too?…

                      Flying High

For the last couple of days I kinda wondered why I wasn’t getting any responses to my photo posts, and feeling fairly confident that I hadn’t suddenly started posting boring stuff I looked further and discovered that in upgrading my wordpress blog version I deactivated the plugin that sends my blog posts to twitter…Ah the power of technology to wreak havoc in our lives …but that story’s for another show…

So today I thought I’d play around with a different picture format and ask you what you think.

And that brings me to the title of today’s photo: "Lessons I Learnt From George Benson"

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting George Benson twice when he performed at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival (I think he may have performed on three different occasions)

…And I was always struck by the fact that every time you ran into George he was always signing.  And I remember asking him: "Hey George how comes it is that every time I bump into you are always signing?"

Here’s what he said to me:

"Well you see to stay at the top of your game requires more than just talent.  You’ve got to practice, practice, practice.  Now take a great guitarist, or pianist.  You will always find them working at their keyboard or their guitar.  Well my instrument is my voice, and like them I practice all the time…But best of all there’s no extra weight carrying my voice around!"

Well right there and then I vowed to practice my photography a whole lot more.

This picture above was shot with a tiny Canon 5.2 MP point and shoot camera through the window of an aircraft  on my way back home, probably from another Miami shopping trip!

The challenge I gave myself was to capture the beauty of the scene below me, show that I was in an aircraft and reduce the reflection from the cabin window.

               Mending Nets

In the quiet little village of Anse-La-Raye (pronounced Ans..as in answer, and Ray as in X-ray and loosely translating to Bay of the rays) you will find fishermen mending their nets most every afternoon.

It is a quiet kind of work that requires much attention and as a result always makes for portraits with character.

                                  Blowing In The Wind

While at a 4th of July concert in Miami I couldn’t resist this figure blowing in the wind…Firstly in the wind that was pumped into it to keep it going, and secondly in the wind that was blowing all around it.

All told it made for a mesmerizing dancing figure reminiscent of a figure called Tan Tan (& Saga Boy), introduced to Trinidad Carnival many years ago by none other than The Great Peter Minshall
